On This Day: In 3, October, 1873 Kintpuash, better known as Captain Jack, was hanged by US Army officials. He was a chief of the Native American Modoc tribe of California and Oregon, and was their leader during the Modoc War. After being removed from their homeland around Tule Lake to the Klamath Reservation, Captain Jack led some of his people back to their traditional homeland. Over several months of fighting and negotiations, the US Army finally captured Captain Jack and others, hanging him in public at Fort Klamath.
